Do you know the porosity of your hair?

Hair porosity is the ability for your hair to absorb and retain moisture. To stay healthy, your hair needs to stay moisturized. And by knowing your hair porosity, you are able to curate a hair routine that ensures your kinky curls and coils stay moisturized, especially in cold seasons!

Start By Filling a Glass With Water

Since porosity is all about moisture retention, you can test how well your hair absorbs moisture by analyzing your hair in water.

Grab One or Two Strands of Hair and Drop Them In The Glass

As previously mentioned, your hair’s porosity can change depending on your styling habits and the types of products you use. You likely also have different curl patterns around your head, so it’s best to gather strands from different parts of your head.

See Where It Lands

If your hair immediately sinks to the bottom, then it’s highly porous. If it floats in the middle, then it’s in the medium to normal porosity range, and if it sits on top, then it has a low porosity.

Now that you’ve identified your hair porosity type with this easy hair porosity quiz, let’s dig into how to care for your hair.

Low porosity hair

With low porosity hair, your hair cuticles are closely packed together, making it harder for your hair to absorb and retain moisture. Because of this, you may observe that hair products tend to sit on your hair and don’t absorb easily, and it takes a long time for your hair to dry.

If you have low porosity hair:

  • Steam your hair regularly. Treat your hair to steaming while you deep condition, to allow the hair to absorb the moisture better.

  • Stay away from protein treatments as they are not easily absorbed by your hair.

  • Cleanse and wash your scalp regularly to remove product build-up.

High porosity hair

On the other hand, when you have high porosity hair, your hair cuticles are too open, easily absorbing moisture but losing it just as fast. You may observe that your hair tends to be fizzy and dry and hair products are easily absorbed.

If you have high porosity hair:

  • Incorporate butters and oils in your regimen as this will help to moisturize your hair.

  • Use leave-in conditioners and sealers.

  • Protein treatments
